Pond Creek Gardens is the namesake of the creek coming from the Cumberland River that runs along side this small family farm. Christian Coleman is the man behind the vision of this farm in Pegram, TN. He lives on the Pond Creek family farmland with his wife and two children. After attending college for horticulture, Christian started Pond Creek Gardens out of the interest of finding high quality food. As it turns out, the way to find the highest quality food for Christian was to start growing it himself. Now in his third year, Christian finds himself pursuing a lifestyle where he works for himself, sees direct results, and feeds his family and the community.
Pond Creek Gardens uses no chemicals in their farming methods, not even organic sprays. Farming one third of an acre, open field and high tunnel, one of Christian's goals for Pond Creek Gardens is to continually enrich the soil with organic matter, building it to where it is more nutrient dense and better quality each season. One of the biggest goals was accomplished last year when Christian was able to pursue farming full time, exclusively. This is with the help of his wife. She cares for their children and helps out on the farm whenever she gets the chance. He enjoys all of the diversified aspects of having a small business, especially the market and community relationships formed with those consuming his food. He loves having regulars at the market and cherishes that he gets to know his customers' favorites each season. Being able to get direct feedback from the families enjoying Pond Creek Gardens' produce is a great perk of the Richland Creek Farmer's Market to Christian. The best, though, is getting to know the children and getting to have simple, baseline conversation around food with community.
Christian's favorite crop to grow at Pond Creek Farms is green beans. They are absurdly productive, and people just love them! Now, they're not fun to pick... He spends hours upon hours to harvest them, making him thankful that they have no spines. Pond Creek Gardens has lettuce year round, and summer salad mix and arugula are coming soon! He hopes to have this year's cherry tomato crop be abundant. We are looking forward to the favored patty pan squash, and love Pond Creek Gardens' selection of root vegetables each year.
We are so glad to have Pond Creek Gardens as a part of the Richland Park Farmer's Market each Saturday and look forward to you using their produce in this season's farm fresh meals you'll be preparing.
